The Shindokan Dojo

Build Confidence. Live Strong.

Who We Are

The Shindokan Dojo is a traditional Japanese martial arts school, offering authentic and world-class instruction in Yoshinkan Aikido. Our focus is on ADULTS and YOUNG ADULTS of all skill levels — from beginner to intermediate to advanced.

The Shindokan Dojo is affiliated with Aikido Yoshinkai Canada under the direction of Takeshi Kimeda Sensei, 9th dan and the most senior teacher of Yoshinkan Aikido in the world.

All of the instructors at the Shindokan Dojo are certified by the Headquarters of the style in Japan and our most senior instructors all hold the SHIHAN (Master Teacher) title. These titles were awarded  upon the recommendation of Kimeda Sensei himself.

What We Offer

The Shindokan Dojo is dedicated to helping you build a strong mind and body through the study of Yoshinkan Aikido. As a member of the dojo, you will learn powerful and effective self-defence techniques in a respectful, non-aggressive and non-competitive environment. These are the same techniques that are taught to the Tokyo Riot police.

The training method employed at the Shindokan Dojo emphasizes learning how to achieve your personal goals without negatively impacting others. As you gain confidence and skill in the techniques, you will find that you are developing a sense of centred calm — an even approach to daily life which will in turn help you to cope in today’s stressful world. This confidence is an important benefit of modern martial arts training.

Improved Mental and
Physical Fitness

Just as exercise strengthens your body, facing and overcoming challenges strengthens your mind. Aikido can help by showing you how to bounce back from setbacks as well as the importance of not letting things get you down, no matter how hard they seem.

Increased
Focus and Discipline

Aikido techniques require awareness and sensitivity. As a result, Aikido training can help reduce your stress and anxiety by encouraging you to practice mindfulness, deep breathing, and concentration. It helps train your mind to keep your attention focused while remaining calm and alert.

Supportive, Non-Competitive Environment

Aikido training is not competitive or agressive. Unlike other types of martial arts training, Aikido encourages us to work together to discover the principles behind the techniques. In this way, we uncover the true effectiveness of the techniques through collaboration.
